NL Holdem Poker- Who is Phil Ivey?

Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker player in the world by quite a few of the top-ranked professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before his first birthday. His grandfather taught him one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup anything he possibly could about poker. Phil would tell his elders that he was planning on being a professional poker player. He did not allow the detrimental feedback from other people destroy his goal of becoming one of the greatest poker players on the planet.

He began playing seriously after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his skills at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The initial number of years for him were a teaching opportunity and coming away with a win was not a common outcome at the time. He became known at the 2000 WSOP where he made two final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the last table he defeated many of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He decided to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Sin City. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to discipline and a continuing passion for the game of poker. Phil states that he is learning every day and is quite abashed about his accomplishments. Phil admits to making blunders every single game of poker and constantly aspires to get better.

Although Phil has won some big tournaments, he favors destroying money games on a normal basis.
