NL Holdem Poker- Who is Phil Ivey?

Phil Ivey has been branded as the greatest poker player in the world by many of the top pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather introduced him to penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was addicted to poker and wished to pickup anything he possibly could about the game. Phil would tell his parents that he was going to be a professional poker player. He did not permit the adverse comments from others destroy his dream of becoming one of the greatest poker players in the world.

Phil began playing intently after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his game at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first few years for Phil were a learning period and winning was not a regular thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP where he achieved two final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the final table he defeated a number of the well known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

Phil made a decision to take his skills to the successive level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his success to discipline and a continuing love for poker. He says that he is picking up skills every single day and is very humble about his success. He admits to making blunders every single game of poker and always aspires to improve.

Even though Ivey has come first in some big-time tournaments, he prefers winning cash games on a regular basis.
