NL Hold’em Poker- Who is Phil Ivey?
Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker competitor on the planet by most of the top pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather showed him to one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to learn anything he possibly could about poker. Phil would tell his elders that he was going to be a professional poker player. He didn’t let the negative feedback from other people destroy his dream of becoming one of the strongest poker competitors in the world.
Phil began competing intently after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his techniques at the casinos of Atlantic City. The initial few years for him were a teaching period and winning wasn’t a normal thing at the time. He became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made two final tables and came away with his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the last table he destroyed many of the better known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Vegas. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to dedication and a continuing passion for poker. He says that he is learning every day and is very humble about his accomplishments. Phil knows he makes errors in each session of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some big-time tournaments, he favors winning money games on a regular basis.
